The biggest racing festival in Ireland! A week filled with adrenalin-pumping action, heart-stopping finishes and breath-taking fashion.
The atmosphere can be felt throughout the city with many pubs and clubs open late. The party spills out onto the streets where the many street performances and buskers will keep everyone entertained. And at the heart of it all is Barnacles Hostel Galway on Quay Street! Quay Street will be the hub of all the night life for the week!
Whether you come to Galway for the racing, craic or fashion this week is guaranteed to be jammed packed with entertainment.
The Wonder of the Galway Arts Festival
Magic Walks Tall in Galway City
Imagine turning a corner and coming face to face with an enormous fire spitting dragon, or a giant, wide-eyed girl seemingly lost in a strange land.

In a flash, you turn to find a ghoul sniffing your shoulder before a seated dinosaur wheels by, accompanied by a brass band.
Meanwhile, just as you think you’re safe, two witches ask you to tango… this was the madness of the Annual Galway Arts Festival Parade!!

The theme was “This Fierce Beauty” so there was a lot of dragons and scary, yet oddly pretty characters. The paper mache-ing was out of this world, all those participating were extremely into it and the whole show was full of fire. A definite win in the Barnacles book.

Later things to come during this week for arts fest that we’re looking forward to is an art exhibition by Aideen Barry at the NUIG campus, The ‘Comedy of Errors’ show (we have 2 free tickets to give away!!), the Misterman show featuring the gorgeous Ciaran Murphy, Blondie performs in the Big Top and a Silent Disco complete with laser-robots on Friday night. Needless to say this will be a fantastic week.
And what’s more….Barnacles Hostel have joined in on the Arts Festival Madness with beds from only 10 Euro!!! Don’t miss out on this fantastic festival book your stay today!!

Feel the love at Barnacles Hostel Temple Bar!!
Feel the love at Barnacles Hostel Temple Bar!!

Is Irish Hospitality still alive and kicking in Ireland? Well two girls found out as they attempted to travel around the East of Ireland for one week absolutely free! Travel around Ireland for Free is run in association with the Independent Holiday Hostels Association of Ireland. The two volunteers this year are Claire Prendergast and Sadhbh O’Sullivan.

For one whole week the girls had to rely on Irish hospitality to put a roof over their heads, provide transport, feed, water and provide plenty of Guinness . Their journey ended today at Barnacles Hostel in Temple Bar. Looking for a free bed for the night, in good fun, Barnacles hostel decided to set a challenge for the girls so they could earn their keep! The Challenge: to give out 50 free hugs in Temple Bar!!
The Barnacles Hostel Crew decided the only way to get the challenge up and running was to lead by example with staff member Denis giving the girls their first hugs of the day. The girls got some funny looks and stares but eventually some folks took pity on their cause and felt the love and the hugging began! Once the first few passersby joined in, the ball really got rolling with the girls reaching their target of 50 people in no time! With their free night earned, they had completed their mission proving that Irish hospitality is indeed alive and kicking!

The girls have travelled from Dublin down the east coast to waterford back up through Killkenny finally arriving at Barnacles Hostel in Dublin. With nothing in their pockets and a smile on their face they proved that the famous Irish welcome is still present in Ireland!!
